Cyberattack Hits Poland’s Nuclear Research Center

Poland’s National Centre for Nuclear Research faced a targeted cyberattack against its IT infrastructure, the facility has confirmed.

Security teams successfully contained the breach before malicious actors could infiltrate critical systems or compromise sensitive data.

Despite the digital intrusion, the facility maintained full operational continuity, including power output from its sole operational nuclear reactor, the MARIA facility.

This rapid detection and mitigation highlight the effectiveness of the centre’s established security protocols in the face of rising global threats to critical national infrastructure.

Given the potential impact on reactor safety and radioactive materials, maintaining physical infrastructure integrity is paramount during any incident.

Director Professor Jakub Kupecki promptly reassured the public, confirming the MARIA reactor remains secure and fully operational.

The attack was intercepted by the centre’s security systems, which blocked the network breach according to protocol.

Dedicated security teams immediately isolated and secured the targeted infrastructure, preventing any impact on ongoing research, isotope production, or daily operations.

Coordinated Government Response

Following the incident, the centre engaged national cybersecurity authorities for a joint investigation into the attack’s origins and to strengthen defenses.

Poland’s response involves close coordination with multiple high-level agencies to safeguard critical national infrastructure against sophisticated cyber threats.

Key participants include:

  • The Research and Academic Computer Network (NASK-PIB)
  • The Ministry of Digital Affairs and Deputy Prime Minister Krzysztof Gawkowski
  • The Ministry of Energy and Minister Miłosz Motyka

While the immediate threat was neutralized, continuous monitoring is underway to detect potential secondary attacks, as threat actors often use persistent tactics.

The swift government coordination ensures valuable threat intelligence gained can be shared to protect other vital national assets.

The National Centre for Nuclear Research reaffirmed its readiness to defend Poland’s digital security perimeters against future threats.

Through rapid incident response and collaboration with federal cybersecurity agencies, the centre protected its critical infrastructure without downtime or safety risks.
